Yummy and Delicious After-School Snacks that are Parent and Kid Approved

When your kids are home from school for the day, they can seem like ravenous creatures in the wild waiting to pounce on anything that is a sugary treat.  They go straight for the potato chips or the sweet candy snacks.  While you may know that there are healthy alternatives, chances are that those snacks are not their first choice.  But there are delicious and sweet snack choices out there that not only your kids will love but you as parents won’t feel guilty about giving to them.  A bonus about the recipes below are that not only are they healthy and your kids love to eat them, they are pretty easy and quick to make.  So you don’t have to worry about dramatic displays of how hungry and how they are on the brink of starvation.  Here are some recipes that make for a perfect after-school snack:

1. Apple Teeth

Ingredients:

  • One Apple
  • Peanut Butter
  • Mini Marshmallows

These are a delicious treat and they are fun to  make too!  A bonus is that they can learn a little bit about their own teeth.  Cut your apple in to slices.  Spread peanut butter on each slice and then add a row of mini marshmallows.  The apple represents your bone, the peanut butter is your gums and the mini marshmallows are your teeth.  They are delicious and healthy!  These are great snacks not only use throughout the year but specifically Halloween!

2. Yogurt Parfait Bar

Ingredients: 

  • Nonfat vanilla yogurt
  • Honey
  • Crushed Granola
  • Bananas
  • Strawberries
  • Cantaloupe
  • Grapes
  • Whipped Cream

This is a fun after school snack to make with your kids.  Add honey at the bottom of your bowl and then the granola.  Fill a layer of the nonfat vanilla yogurt.  Let your child add all the fruits that they would like in the bowl and top with a bit of whipped cream.  This is a delicious treat that tastes just like dessert!

3. Strawberry & Banana Smoothie

Ingredients:

  • Strawberries
  • Non-Fat Milk
  • Bananas
  • Nonfat Vanilla Yogurt
  • Little bit of spinach

Mix all of these ingredients together in a blender adding more or less milk depending on how frothy you would like your smoothie to be.  To sneak a bit of vegetables, add a little of bit of spinach in the blender to add more nutrients.  Not only does it taste delicious, your kids will never know they ate a vegetable!
